MacCallum’s Boathouse in Epsom, NH is an awesome spot in the New England area where you can get all of your Phase 5 needs. Originally started in 1949, MacCallum’s Boathouse not only offers wake surf items but also sells boats, offers storage, mechanical services, and more! They’re a one stop shop for all things lake life. We caught up with the president, Peter MacCallum, to see how the business came about and why they carry Phase 5. Check it out below.
PHASE 5:Hi Peter, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a bit about yourself and MacCallum's Boathouse.
Peter:I am a 3rd Generation Dealership owner and President of a business originally started by my Grandfather here in NH in 1949. Our business team consists of 11 full-time, year round employees, offering technical engine services, boat storage, boat sales, parts, accessories and pro shop. Our brands include Nautique, Harris, Four Winns, Mercury, Mercruiser, Volvo and PCM. Pro Shop product fulfilled by HO, Hyperlite and PHASE 5 Surfers. My wife and I, as well as grown children, live here in New Hampshire and when not at the dealership, we spend time boating on the beautiful lakes here as well as the seacoast. I am grateful to be engaged in our industry all week and seek to hit the waterways on our days off. We live a great life enjoying the boating/water sport culture with our family and friends.
PHASE 5:What are some of your thoughts on the current state of the water sports industry?
Peter: I have a somewhat unique perspective here having spent my entire life and career in the Boating Industry. At MacCallum's Boathouse, we identify growth markets within the water sports boat (Nautique) market and performance (Harris) pontoon space. We would love to see growth again within the fiberglass runabout marketplace, however, view that as static at the moment with minimal growth potential. I've made a concerted effort to align my business with the highest quality products available within our market here. Products that can over-perform expectations of a high demand client base will win. The future? I'm intrigued with EV products. My opinion, until waterfront infrastructures can support these EV products the growth will be minimal. Additionally, as battery expenses decrease, battery technology increases and usage time between charging improves, the market will grow. I'll always be open to change and be ready to adapt, however I'll always be a petrol boat dealer.
PHASE 5:What is a challenge for the overall industry, where the WSIA can or is helping get to a solution?
Peter: Legislation and Education at the State level. New Hampshire is a stunningly beautiful State and as a result there are many types of users on our waterways. Finding a consumer balance presents a challenge on some of our Lakes, Ponds and Rivers. As the success of our dealership here depends on healthy, safe and shared waterways, we look to WSIA for guidance for Legislative support, Educational promotion (through the Wake Responsibly campaign) and fact finding within the WSIA nationwide membership. Often, learning what other regions are experiencing for success (or failure) in these areas are invaluable.
PHASE 5: Is there work the WSIA does that you are a part of, by way of a committee or other position?
Peter: WSIA has been particularly supportive of the New Hampshire Marine Trades Association (www.boatingnh.com). In our several years working together, we have been successful aligning our beliefs with stakeholders in growing the sport of wake sports here in NH. I am a past President of the NHMTA (NH Marine Trades Association) and am very thankful to have the support of WSIA, MRAA and NMMA in our boating community and industry here.
PHASE 5:Why have you remained a long-time active member of the WSIA?
Peter: Interesting question, very simply I believe in what WSIA speaks to. Their organization is unique and the only dealer "hotline" in our marketplace. Having one source of support, data and information that is tied to our water sports business is a difference maker. My dealership participates actively in a 20 Group, Manufacturer's Roundtables and other nationwide groups supporting Boating. It's the focus that WSIA offers within the water sports space that makes them special to me as a business owner.
