TEAM | “This or That” with John Akerman

  • 2 min read

You know our team riders can do it all…but what do they prefer?! We caught up with John Akerman for some rapid fire “This or That” questions to see what he really enjoys! Check it out now.

PHASE 5: Surf or skim or foil?
John: All of the above! This season I’ve been really fired up on Skim and Surf. My new MVP shape and Sensei surfboard are so different from what I’ve been riding for so long, it has sparked a new flame of stoke!

PHASE 5: Sunrise or sunset sessions?
John: Sunset for sure! I’d rather ride through some rollers in the afternoon and catch the golden hour.

PHASE 5: Big riding crew or small?
John: I like to ride with a big crew. More people in the boat is going to give me the best wave. That matters most. However, I prefer to ride with riders who are down to rotate quickly.

PHASE 5: When foiling, tricks on the first wave or pumping around?
John: My ideal situation is to have a set up that can conquer all the boat has to offer. I ride the Gofoil Flip package with the 975 front foil and it is great for first wave and rollers! If I’m foiling solo, I’ll stay on the first wave. When I’m foiling with a big crew, pumping around is the move!

PHASE 5: When you’re not wakesurfing, ocean skimming or ocean surfing?
John: Skimboarding is my favorite sport ever. But it takes the right tide and beach conditions to line up. I find myself surfing most because it’s the most consistent and it’s the best training for all board sports.

PHASE 5: Style or tech tricks?
John: I’m more of a style and amplitude guy. I have too much fun when I ride to worry about what the “hardest trick” is.

PHASE 5: Ahi or Sensei?
John: I ride my Sensei when I’m trying to ride at a competitive level. I ride my Ahi when I’m more relaxed and vibing with friends.

PHASE 5: Backside or frontside?
John: I’m fascinated by wave transfer tricks on my skim so I’ve been working on backside tricks I can learn and switch tricks. Surf has opened up this new love for backside riding because I can get a really good drive and pop off the fins.

PHASE 5: When foiling, straps or no straps?
John: Lately, I’ve been focusing on my surfing and skimming so foiling has been strapless. Nothing like a fun session with your boys pumping all over the place and hijacking wakes!
