TEAM | Contest Mindset with Jett Lambert

  • 2 min read

It’s no secret that Jett Lambert is at the top of the competitive surf scene. In most cases, if Jett enters, he’s going to wind up on the podium, if not the number one spot! So what’s going through his mind when he’s walking up to the dock for a potential make-or-break contest situation? Well, we caught up with him to see what really makes him tick! Check it out below.

PHASE 5: What’s up, Jett? How have things been?
Jett:What’s up! Things have been great. I’ve been working on my riding, staying in shape, and most importantly, having fun!

PHASE 5: WIth the season in full swing, we wanted to know what’s going on in your head when competing. Do you approach every event the same way or do you tweak your training depending on the event?
Jett: I usually train pretty similarly leading up to my contests. I know that if I put in the work during training, I’ll be in a great spot when it’s time to execute my run.

PHASE 5: What’s going through your mind while waiting on the starting dock before a finals run?
Jett: I know that I’ve trained my butt off leading up to this moment. I have the confidence I need, and now I just need to lock in and do what I do best.

PHASE 5: Do you have a pre-contest ritual that you need to go through every time or are you not that superstitious?
Jett: I try not to get caught up in superstitions or things like that. I kind of just go with the flow, maybe put a song on, and make sure my body is feeling loose and ready to go.

PHASE 5: What are some things you do to stay cool under pressure?
Jett: I love the feeling of knowing that all the pressure is on me. In my opinion, my riding is a lot better in those situations. I don’t really get nervous, so I just keep my head down and know that if I do what I need to do, I’ll be in a good spot.

PHASE 5: What are some tips you can give to younger riders who want to start competing?
Jett: I’d say the main thing is to have fun with it! Learn from both the good and bad moments from every contest and carry those lessons into the next one.

PHASE 5: Thanks for the insights, Jett. Is there anything you’d like to tell us?
Jett: Thanks, crew! Shoutout to Phase 5 for making the best boards on the market. I’m going to do my best to put them on the top spot this year!
